Looking for colleges with friendly LGBTQ+ communities?

I'm starting to compile a list of colleges to apply to in the fall, and one of my criteria is how LGBTQ+ friendly they are. Does anyone have recommendations for colleges known for their strong and welcoming LGBTQ+ communities? Thanks in advance!

I'd be more than happy to help you out here! First up, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has consistently rated as one of the top colleges for LGBTQ+ students due to its progressive atmosphere, wealth of resources, and robust student organizations like UCLA Queer Alliance.

Another university that receives high marks in this regard is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT is home to a vibrant LGBTQ+ community and its Rainbow Lounge is a safe and welcoming space where you can connect with other LGBTQ+ students. MIT also offers several gender-inclusive housing options.

Tufts University, in Medford, Massachusetts, also has a strong reputation for being very LGBTQ+ friendly. Tufts' group, Queer Students Association (QSA), is quite active and the university also offers a minor in "Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora" that includes queer studies.

In the Midwest, the University of Wisconsin–Madison is recognized for its inclusive campus culture and supportive institutions like the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center. The center provides resources and events for students and actively advocates for equity.

Lastly, let's not forget about schools like New York University (NYU), which is known for its inclusive atmosphere and is located in a city with a thriving LGBTQ+ scene. NYU's LGBTQ+ Center is the epicenter of queer activity on campus, and it hosts a variety of events, from social gatherings to workshops. Even though these examples are from larger universities, many small liberal arts colleges also have strong LGBTQ+ communities, such as Swarthmore College and Pomona College.

While looking into these colleges, make sure you also consider factors like your planned field of study, campus culture beyond the LGBTQ+ community, location, and financial possibilities. And remember, the best way to learn about a school's LGBTQ+ community is from the students themselves. Try to reach out to current students or use resources like college search tools to get more personalized information. Best of luck with your college search!
