Key Things I Should Focus on for College?

Hey, everyone! I'll be starting college soon and I'm wondering if anyone can offer some advice as to what I should really be focusing on? I want to make the most of my time there, and not just academically. What are some of the most important things for a successful college life?

Understanding that college is about much more than academics is a great first step toward a successful experience. You also need to prioritize personal growth, health, and your social life.

1. Time Management: There are probably more obligations and opportunities in college than you had in high school. As such, time management becomes crucial. Experiment with various methods (like digital tools or the old-school planner) to find what works best for you. Also, remember to allocate time for self-care.

2. Health and Wellness: It's not unusual for college students to struggle with staying healthy, due to stress, erratic sleep schedules or unhealthy eating habits. Prioritize physical wellness by engaging in regular exercise, eating balanced meals, and getting an adequate sleep. Don't hesitate to seek mental health support from campus resources if needed.

3. Getting Involved: Engaging in clubs, sports, and other extracurricular activities is a major part of the college experience. Not only do these contribute to personal development, but they also provide great opportunities to forge deep, lasting friendships. Don't stretch yourself too thin, though. It's better to be deeply involved in a few activities than to barely participate in many.

4. Professional Development: Take advantage of opportunities like internships, research, and networking events. These will foster professional skills and can open doors for your future career. Make sure to visit your school’s career service center early and often.

5. Exploring Interests: College is also about discovering and pursuing your passions, both inside and outside your major. Whether it's taking classes in an intriguing subject, joining a new club, or starting a project with some classmates, don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

6. Building Relationships: Connections you make in college could last a lifetime. They also could be beneficial to your career after college. Learn to network with professors, fellow students, college staff and visiting professionals.

Remember, everyone's college experience is unique. What works for one person may not work for another. Seek to establish balance across these areas and remember that it's okay to adjust as needed as you go through your college years.
