What determines the number of freshmen on a college football team?

Hey everybody, I've always been curious about college sports and I was wondering if there's a specific cap on the number of freshmen that can be registered for a college football team. Like, is there a set number or does it vary based on the college's requirements/preferences?

The number of freshmen on a college football team does fluctuate and it isn't determined by a rigid cap specifically for freshmen. Instead, the overall team size is more regulated.

In college football, the NCAA sanctions the total number of players on a team, including freshmen. For Division I schools, the team limit is set at 105 players during the fall season. During the off-season or spring season, there is no limit. This number comprises all athletes, including walk-ons, scholarship athletes, and redshirt players.

Freshmen recruitment numbers will therefore depend on how many upperclassmen are already on the team, the number of available scholarships, and how many athletes the coach wants to add to the roster for that year. However, the coach has to make sure the total number of players falls within the NCAA regulations.

Keep in mind the freshmen recruitment number could also be influenced by the team's specific needs, which might depend on the positions that need to be filled because some players graduated, were injured, or left the team. Therefore, the number of freshmen recruited varies from year to year and depends on various factors.
