Hello, I am currently a junior and I want to make the most out of my remaining high school career both academically and extracurricular-wise. Any suggestions or experiences on what worked for you or what you wish you had done differently?
Firstly, congratulations on seeking to make the most of your high school experience in the time you have left. Both your academic and extracurricular experiences are important not only for college applications but also for your personal and professional growth.
Academically, the key is to challenge yourself without being overwhelmed. Honors and AP courses can demonstrate your academic rigor. Just remember, it's not all about quantity. Quality reigns supreme; achieving high grades in 3 AP classes is often seen as more impressive than mediocre grades in 5 or 6.
In terms of extracurriculars, keep in mind the importance of engaging activities you're genuinely passionate about, not merely the ones you think will look good on a college application. Colleges look for depth and continued interest in these activities, rather than a large quantity with little commitment. Aim for leadership roles or strive to make significant contributions in the activities you select, to demonstrate your engagement and dedication.
Remember the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars: Tier 1 is rare but demonstrates exceptional achievement. Tier 2 is more common and still demonstrates achievement and leadership. Tier 3 activities show your interests, while Tier 4 activities are most common and often seen by admissions committees. Strive to have a mix, and remember, cultivate your "spike," or your highly developed passion.
Lastly, reflect on the unique offerings and opportunities your high school provides. Does your school offer clubs, sports, or organizations that you've always wanted to join? Do they offer unique classes, internships, or cooperative programs with local colleges or businesses? If so, take advantage of these!
Remember, high school isn't just a stepping-stone to college. It's a time to explore and grow. Best of luck as you continue your journey.
