What are the most vital things to consider when buying supplies for college?

Hey everyone, I'm gonna be a freshman next year and I want to know what are some things that I definitely need to have when I go to college? I know the basics like linens and a water filter, but is there anything else that's super necessary or something you didn't realize you needed until you got there?

Definitely, the first thing to understand is that what you need can vary depending on your lifestyle, needs, and the specifics of your college (like if you'll be sharing a bathroom or if you'll have your own), but I can provide a general list that should cover most bases:

An essential supply is a laptop or tablet for taking notes and completing assignments, and a decent backpack or laptop bag to carry it in. Depending on your field of study, you may need certain software or hardware that could influence what kind of device you need.

Another important item is a surge protector. This is a great way to keep your electronic devices safe, especially if you’re living in older housing that may have unpredictable wiring.

Kitchen supplies are also necessary. Even if you plan on eating in the dining hall, it's good to have some basic cooking items for late-night snacks or meals on the go. This includes a microwave, a mini-fridge, a few dishes, silverware, cups, and possibly a coffeemaker if you drink coffee.

Stationary and school supplies: It's always handy to have pens, pencils, notebooks, flashcards, highlighters, etc. Also, don't forget a folder or binder to keep your loose papers and assignments organized.

Additionally, sanitation items, hygiene products, and over-the-counter medication. If you’re sharing a bathroom, a shower caddy and flip-flops are key. Stocking up on items like hand sanitizers, Lysol wipes, tissues, and simple OTC medicines can be a lifesaver for when you're feeling under the weather or in the midst of flu season.

Lastly, some form of noise-canceling headphones or earplugs. College life can be noisy and having a way to block out the noise when you're trying to study or sleep can be invaluable.

I've heard from many students who say that they didn't think they'd need some of these items until they were in the middle of their first semester, so it's definitely a good idea to plan ahead! Remember to check with your college about what is and isn’t allowed in the dorms, as some colleges may not allow items like coffeemakers or microwaves. For things like linens, don't forget to check if your college uses standard or extra-long twin beds, as most do.
