Tough Majors Leading to College Dropout

Hello everyone! I just wanted to know more about the college dropout phenomenon. What are some of the most dropped majors in college? Why do students often find them so overwhelming? Any insights would be helpful, thanks!

Hello! A few majors are notoriously challenging and often see higher dropout rates. Specifically, those within the sciences, engineering, and mathematics fields, such as Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science.

A few reasons have been suggested as to why students often find these majors overwhelming:

1. Rigorous coursework: These fields are known for their rigorous coursework, requiring heavy mathematics and theoretical concepts that can be difficult to comprehend and apply.

2. Workload: The workload can be challenging, and it may be more extensive than what students may have been used to in high school. Balancing this with other commitments such as work, can be a trigger point for dropping out.

3. Grades and competition: In some educational institutions, these majors are often graded on a curve, which leads to a highly competitive environment, which can put additional pressure on the students.

4. Lack of preparedness: If a student jumps into these programs without being adequately prepared either due to an insufficient high school foundation in these subjects or lack of understanding about the rigor and commitment required, they might struggle more than their peers.

However, it's always essential to remember that struggling initially or feeling overwhelmed doesn't automatically mean one won't be successful in these majors or should drop out. Many students face challenges initially but later do very well! It's crucial to seek out resources on campus like tutoring, study groups, faculty office hours, and mental health resources if the pressure is starting to feel too much.
