What Are the Most Challenging College Courses?

Hey folks, so I'm trying to get a head start here. Are there any particular college courses that are notorious for being really tough? Anything I could potentially do some self-study on now to prepare?

It's a great idea to prepare in advance. While every college student’s experience with courses is different (given different interests and learning abilities), some courses are frequently regarded as challenging. But remember, difficulty frames more on individual aptitude than the course itself.

A few courses regularly receive the "tough" label including Organic Chemistry (OChem), Biochemistry, Thermodynamics (in Engineering), Quantum Mechanics (in Physics), and Advanced Calculus. These subjects often demand heavy conceptual understanding and frequent problem-solving approaches.

For Liberal arts, things could be different. Courses such as philosophy, political theory, and literature, particularly areas like postmodernism, can be pretty challenging because they require deep critical thinking and sophisticated textual analysis.

For business courses, accounting and statistics are often seen as challenging - they involve a lot of numbers and computations, which can be quite complex.

If one of these subject areas aligns with your major of interest, some early self-study could be beneficial. Use online resources like Khan Academy, Coursera, or EdX to learn the basics. Remember to not over-stress yourself. Part of the college experience is learning how to manage and tackle these difficult courses, so don't feel like you need to learn everything beforehand. Give yourself the pace and time to enjoy the journey as well.
