What skills gained in college increase your ability to get hired?

I'd appreciate some insight on this. Along with my major, I want to pick up some relevant skills during my time in college that could enhance my ability to get hired. Do you guys have any suggestions on what skills are high in demand in the job market these days?

Sure, happy to provide some suggestions! Picking up key skills during your college years is a great approach. Here are a few in-demand skills that could enhance your ability to get hired:

1. Digital Literacy: As our world becomes increasingly digital, knowing your way around digital tools and platforms is invaluable. This can include everything from proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite to understanding the basics of coding or website development.

2. Data Analysis: The growing importance of data in nearly all sectors means that data analysis skills are highly sought-after. Familiarising yourself with data analysis tools such as Google Analytics and Excel, or languages such as SQL or Python, can give you a leg up.

3. Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: While specific to no single field, employers across industries value the ability to think critically about problems and devise effective solutions. This is one skill you will likely learn and refine in your college coursework.

4. Communication skills: Being able to articulate your thoughts and ideas clearly, listen effectively, and work well in a team are extremely valuable in professional settings.

5. Cultural Competence: With international business and remote work becoming more commonplace, having the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds is a big plus.

6. Leadership: Employers value those who can inspire and motivate others, take responsibility, and execute decisions. Leadership skills can be honed through leading group projects, taking on roles in student organizations, and other similar opportunities.

Remember that these are skills that you can learn both inside and outside of your classes. For example, joining clubs, participating in internships, and working on campus are all great ways to build these skills. It's also a good idea to consider skills specific to your desired field or industry.

For instance, if you're pursuing a career in marketing, understanding social media platforms and their analytics can be a great asset. You might consider talking to upperclassman friends, and the career services office at your school, for the most personalized guidance given your goals.

Best of luck with your future endeavors!
