What's the LGBTQ+ community like at colleges?

Hi! I'm an LGBTQ+ student and I'm in the process of looking at colleges. Does anyone know which colleges have a particularly strong level of representation and support for LGBTQ+ students? Anywhere in the country is fine; I just want to find a place where I'll feel at home.

Many colleges across the U.S. have strong representation and support for LGBTQ+ students, offering a variety of resources, groups, and events focused on LGBTQ+ concerns. Campus Pride, a national nonprofit that rates colleges on their LGBTQ+ inclusiveness, has a list of the top LGBTQ+ friendly schools, which includes universities like Tufts, The University of Pennsylvania, and Harvey Mudd College. These universities provide dedicated LGBTQ+ resource centers, extensive healthcare and counseling options, gender-inclusive housing, specialized career services, and robust academic offerings related to LGBTQ+ studies.

Moreover, various colleges are notable for their active student-led clubs that support the LGBTQ+ community. For example, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a wide range of student-led organizations, such as "Ten Percent Society" which provides a space for those identifying in the LGBTQ+ community. One of the organization's major events is the annual "Drag Ball," which is one of the campus's biggest LGBTQ+ celebrations.

On the west coast, UCLA's LGBTQ+ community is known for its activism and large presence on campus. The school hosts an "LGBTQ+ Leadership Retreat" and has an active student government coalition that advocates for LGBTQ+ students on campus.

These are just a few examples, and it's worth mentioning that many other colleges and universities across the country have strong commitments to supporting LGBTQ+ students. I recommend looking at the Campus Pride website and checking each college's site or reaching out to their admissions department to learn about their specific LGBTQ+ resources and communities. Important factors to look for are a dedicated LGBTQ+ resource center, gender-inclusive housing options, policies that affirm the rights of trans and nonbinary students, and health and counseling services that are knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ issues.
