What are some of the most popular college grants?

Education is expensive and I'm looking for ways to lessen the financial burden. I've been looking into various scholarships and grants but it's all so overwhelming. Does anyone have suggestions for popular college grants that I could reach out for? Appreciate any inputs!

Certainly, there are a number of grants you could consider applying for to help fund your college education. Keep in mind that while scholarships are generally merit-based, grants are often need-based.

The most notable is the Federal Pell Grant, which is awarded to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor's or professional degree. The exact amount changes yearly, but for the 2024-2025 academic year, the maximum award is $6,495.

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is another federal grant, specifically intended for students with exceptional financial need. Awards range from $100 to $4,000 a year, based on availability of funds at the school.

Another important source of funding for students demonstrating financial need is the TEACH Grant. This grant specifically supports those planning to become teachers in low-income areas. The maximum grant is $4,000 per school year.

State grant programs are a valuable resource that should not be overlooked. For instance, California offers the Cal Grant, which can cover tuition and fees at eligible schools, while the New York State TAP Grant provides aid up to $5,165.

Finally, if your educational path is in the STEM fields, you might also consider grants like the National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program for those intending to become K-12 math or science teachers, or grants from private foundations like Google's Women Techmakers Scholars Program.

Be sure to complete your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to determine your eligibility for these and other grants. Keep an eye on the deadlines, as the early bird often gets the worm when it comes to financial aid!
