Liberal colleges in Maryland?

Hi all, I'm keen on attending a college that's known for its liberal atmosphere. I'm located in Maryland and would prefer to stay in-state if any such options are available here. Can someone share which colleges in Maryland are considered more liberal? Thanks in advance!

Sure, happy to help! Maryland is home to several institutions known for fostering liberal atmospheres, and their student bodies typically lean liberal.

1. Johns Hopkins University: Despite being renowned for its STEM fields (especially medicine and engineering), Hopkins is known for leaning liberal in terms of its student body. Also, Baltimore, where Johns Hopkins is located, is a generally liberal city which might appeal to you.

2. Goucher College: A small liberal arts college located in Towson, it has long been known for its liberal atmosphere and famously became the first college in the nation to require all students to study abroad.

3. St. John's College: Also a liberal arts college, located in Annapolis, it's known for its unique curriculum – the "Great Books" program. The student body tends to be ideologically diverse, but overall, the atmosphere is rather liberal.

4. University of Maryland, College Park: As a public research university, it maintains a diverse and relatively liberal-minded student body. Plus, being near Washington D.C., students often engage in political discourse and activities, many of which lean liberal.

5. Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA): Finally, MICA, located in Baltimore, is generally seen as a bastion of liberal attitudes. As an art and design-focused institution, its students are often involved in creative pursuits, which tend to be associated with liberal viewpoints.

Of course, it's important to visit these campuses yourself to better understand the culture. Just remember, while it's valuable to be in an environment that aligns with your beliefs, it can be equally beneficial to be exposed to diverse perspectives, so don't rule out other options purely based on this criterion. Happy college hunting!
