What does an intense college schedule look like?

As I'm preparing for college, I'm trying to visualize what a really intense college schedule might look like. Were there any semesters when you had to really stretch yourself to balance everything? Was it notable in terms of the number of credits, the difficulty of the courses, or something else?

College schedules can get pretty intense -- especially for those who are pursuing challenging majors or are involved in numerous extracurricular activities. The exact degree of intensity can, of course, vary widely based on your course load, major, and non-academic commitments.

One version of an intense schedule might include taking more than the average number of credits. Most college students take around 15 credits per semester (approximately 5 courses). Pushing that to 18 or even 21 credits (6-7 courses) definitely ramps up the intensity, particularly if these are largely upper-level or major-specific courses.

Another aspect could be the types of classes you're taking. For instance, if you're in a STEM major and taking multiple labs, that can be quite time-consuming as labs often require more hours than a traditional lecture course. Likewise, tackling upper-level courses or classes known to demand a high degree of critical thinking or rigorous project work could add intensity to your schedule.

Aside from academics, if you're committed to a varsity sport, involved in leadership positions in clubs, working a part-time job, or doing a work-study program, these commitments can bring your schedule to an intense level. Each of these commitments could entail dedicating upwards of 10-20 hours per week in addition to your academic work.

Do bear in mind, though, that 'intensity' does not equate to 'better'. An overly intense schedule can lead to burnout, stress, and physical and mental health issues. It's crucial to strike a balance that challenges you but still allows for proper rest and self-care.
