What are the Most Vital College Classes?

Hey guys, I know this is probably a pretty subjective question, but I'm curious as to what you might think. Across all majors, what do you believe are the most important classes that everyone should take in college, regardless of their major, and why do you feel that way?

I think this is a fascinating question, and you're absolutely right that it's pretty subjective. It really depends on what you personally value and what skills you want to develop. But if we're thinking about the breadth of skills and knowledge that will benefit you in adulthood, I'd argue that the following three types of classes could be considered "vital."

First, everyone could benefit from a strong foundation in Writing and Communication. Regardless of your career, the ability to articulate your thoughts, present ideas, and communicate effectively is crucial. Look for classes that involve a lot of writing, presentations, or even public speaking workshops.

Secondly, Critical Thinking and Logic courses, usually found in the philosophy department, can be life-changing. They teach you how to analyze arguments, recognize common logical fallacies, and generally become a more rigorous thinker. It can improve how you approach problems and make decisions, plus it strengthens your other academic work too.

Finally, some basic Financial Literacy can go a long way. Courses on personal finance or economics can help equip you with skills to understand and manage your personal finances, a knowledge area that will affect you daily throughout your life.

Each of these areas--communication, analytical thinking, and financial literacy--are beneficial no matter what path your life takes. Just keep in mind that there’s no “one-size-fits-all” answer to this question and it’s important to consider your personal interests and career goals when choosing your classes too.
