Decoding the College Admission Process

I'm super stressed about the whole college application thing. In your opinion, what's the most important part of the college admission process? Should I be focusing on my essays more or should I work on improving my grades or investing more in my extracurriculars? Seriously need some advice here.

Understandably, the college application process can appear overwhelming, with numerous components all seeming equally important. However, it's crucial to remember that each part has its role.

Firstly, your academic performance is usually given substantial weight in decisions. This comprises not only your GPA but also the rigor of your coursework, such as how many AP courses you have taken and how you performed in them. However, simply striving to boost your grades at the last minute isn't always effective - the strength of your transcript is built over time, and a sudden grade shift may not significantly impact the overall picture.

That said, your essays are your opportunity to illustrate your character, dedication, and interests beyond what can be quantified. They provide context to the rest of your application and are your chance to describe experiences or subjects that have shaped you. You should indeed dedicate a good deal of attention to creating unique, well-crafted essays.

Extracurriculars also hold significant importance. Colleges prefer students who have deeply explored a few passions (known as having a "spike") over just being somewhat involved in a multitude of activities. Quality outweighs quantity here.

Lastly, consider whether or not standardized tests are required or optional at the schools to which you're applying. For example, Dartmouth, Purdue, and Harvard require test scores, while others such as UNC Chapel Hill and University of Michigan remain test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle. If the schools on your list require test scores, you might need to prioritize preparing for those exams.

In summary, perfect balance may not be the answer, but rather, sustained academic efforts, strong essays, and deep involvement in a few extracurriculars. Above all, each element should authentically reflect who you are and what you value.
