Liberal College Campuses?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping to find a college with a really open-minded campus community. Are there any universities particularly known for being incredibly liberal?

Yes, certainly! While many US colleges and universities are progressive and open-minded in nature, there are a few campuses that often earn a reputation for having strongly liberal-leaning student bodies.

First, there are the small liberal arts colleges, such as Oberlin College in Ohio and Reed College in Oregon. They are well-known for their student-led activism and progressive social attitudes. Grinnell College in Iowa also has a reputation for being politically active and liberal.

For larger universities, the University of California, Berkeley, often referred to as Cal or UC Berkeley, has a long-standing reputation for student activism dating back to the 1960s' Free Speech Movement. The University of Wisconsin, Madison, is another larger school with a history of social activism.

Brandeis University, a private research university in Massachusetts, has historically been known for its progressive attitudes and social justice focus.

In the Pacific Northwest, Evergreen State College in Washington has historically been quite progressive, offering an alternative education system where traditional grading isn't used, and students develop their own areas of study.

Many colleges in the Northeastern U.S., such as Brown University and Wesleyan University, are known for their liberal campus environments as well.

Please be advised that while these campuses have a reputation for being liberal, all colleges have a diversity of thought. You'll be able to find a range of political opinions on all of these campuses.

Also, a college's political leaning is only one aspect of its environment. When selecting a college, you should also consider factors like academic programs, location, class size, and financial aid. Always visit (in person or virtually) and talk to current students to get the best sense of the school's culture and whether it's the right fit for you.

Good luck in your college search!
