Pursuing Medicine: How to Get Involved in High School?

Hey all, I'm a junior who wants to pursue medicine in the future, but I'm not exactly sure how to start paving the way for that while still in high school. Does anyone have any suggestions for clubs or associations I should join or activities I should participate in that could give me a head start?

There are a number of opportunities and activities you can pursue in high school to demonstrate your interest in medicine. Here are some examples:

1. HOSA - Future Health Professionals: This is a national organization specifically for students interested in health professions. You'll have opportunities to engage in leadership, networking, and competition events.

2. Volunteer at a local hospital or clinic: This could provide invaluable experience, introduce you to medical professionals, and possibly open up shadowing opportunities.

3. Science Clubs: Joining a science club or competing in events like Science Olympiad, or Biological Olympiad can also demonstrate your commitment to the field. You could even consider starting your own medicine or health-focused club if your school doesn't have one.

4. Research: Pursuing research in a field related to medicine is a great way to dive deeper into your passion. You could reach out to professors at nearby universities for potential opportunities, or compete in science fairs or contests such as the Regeneron Science Talent Search.

5. First Aid or CPR Certification: Acquiring these certifications shows a practical interest in health and safety. Often, your school or local community centers may offer these courses.

6. Courses: If your school offers, take classes in biology, chemistry, human anatomy, or AP Psychology. If not, consider taking online courses or MOOCs related to medical topics.

7. Shadowing: If you can, try to shadow a doctor or other health professional. This offers a firsthand look at the daily life in the field.

In any activity you pursue, remember that demonstrating a deep commitment and making meaningful contributions is more impactful than simply joining multiple activities. Good luck with your future in medicine!
