Which colleges at Oxford are the most oversubscribed?

I'm beginning to think about applying to Oxford and am trying to figure out which college to apply to. I've heard some are more popular, or 'oversubscribed', than others. Does anyone know which ones are? Also, does applying to a more oversubscribed college impact my chances of being accepted?

The popularity of different colleges at Oxford can indeed vary, though it's tricky to pin down certain colleges as being the "most" oversubscribed since this can fluctuate from year to year. Some colleges such as Christ Church, Magdalen, and Balliol can often be more popular due to their size, reputation, or historical charm. However, it's important not to get too caught up in this kind of statistic.

When applying to Oxford, your application is primarily assessed on academic merit and potential. If the college you applied to is oversubscribed for your selected course and you have met the selection criteria, you can be made an offer by another college. This is what is known as the "pooling" system. Essentially, qualified candidates who aren't accepted by their chosen college can still be offered a place by a different college.

So, in answer to your question about whether an oversubscribed college might impact your acceptance chances, it shouldn't be as far as the pooling system is concerned. The key is to select a college where you think you'll be happy and thrive academically rather than purely based on how many applicants it tends to attract. Just make sure that the college you are applying to offers your course.
