How Do I Make the Most Out of High School?

Hey, I'm a junior who's fairly active in and out of school. From AP classes to the debate club, I'm trying to tackle it all. I want to ensure I'm making the most out of these pivotal years, but sometimes it gets overwhelming. Any advice from seniors or grads on how I can better balance everything or maybe even optimize my high school experience?

Hello there! Sounds like you've hit the ground running - that's great! Navigating high school, especially with AP classes and extracurriculars like the debate club, can seem daunting, but there are ways to manage it. Here are some tips for making the most of your high school years:

1. Academics should be your priority. Make sure to focus on your classes and study time above all else. Your GPA and the rigor of your course load will be important factors in college admissions. If you find yourself overwhelmed, it might be a good idea to reassess your schedule, maybe there's a place to lighten the load. Remember, it's better to excel in fewer classes than to do poorly in many.

2. Quality over Quantity. A common misconception is that you need to participate in a large number of extracurriculars. What colleges really value is dedication and growth, which can be demonstrated through deeper involvement in a select few activities. Your involvement with the debate club could offer an opportunity for growth and leadership, which colleges admire.

3. Pursue activities that align with your interests. You’ll likely be more engaged and perform better in clubs and organizations that genuinely interest you, rather than those you’re participating in just for the sake of it. You can take up a certain club because you might want to pursue it in college or even as a career.

4. Balance is key. It's important to balance academics, extracurriculars, and your social life. Take time to decompress and hang out with friends or family. This balance will help prevent burnout and ensure you enjoy your high school experience.

5. Take advantage of your resources. Your school counselors can help guide you through high school and the college application process. They can provide insight into classes and can help you plan your future.

Remember, high school is not only about preparing for college. Make the most of it by enjoying your time and the experiences it offers. Keep your eyes on the prize, but don't forget to live in the present and enjoy these years!
