College Applications: Innovative Approaches?

I'd really love to stand out in the college application process. Do you have any insight on innovative ways to approach this? Also, how do colleges view unconventional yet thoughtful application strategies?

First, remember that innovation can involve both content and presentation. As for the content, rather than focusing on common and overly-used topics, consider highlighting a unique experience, trait, or interest you possess. This could be a hobby that is peculiar, a leadership role you've played in an uncommon setting, or the unique way you've approached a common activity, showing your special point of view or methods.

For presentation, think about how you could utilize the variety of application components to tell a coherent yet engaging story. Colleges are looking for students who are not only academically talented, but also intriguing individuals, so use your application to paint a picture of your unique personality.

At times, applicants will go an extra mile and send in unconventional application supplements, like videos, songs, or even stellar works of art. Many colleges actually encourage this, and there are even some that specify guidelines for submitting such materials. That being said, these types of supplements should ideally provide the admissions committee with a deeper understanding of who you are, instead of just being gimmicky.

Another major note, if you're applying to a school like MIT or University of Chicago that releases unique, unconventional essay prompts, you should definitely embrace the challenge! These schools often appreciate applicants who tackle their questions creatively and thoughtfully.

However, make sure your application’s innovative aspects don’t overshadow the core content. Admissions committees first and foremost want to see a strong academic record, evidence of leadership, commitment to extracurricular activities, strong letters of recommendation, and a thoughtful, well-written essay. It can be beneficial to stand out, but not at the expense of effectively showcasing your qualifications and achievements.

Finally, always remember to do your research. Some institutions might appreciate out-of-the-box thinking more than others. Aim to understand the ethos of the schools you're applying to and that should guide the extent to which you innovate.
