Elusive High School Summer Programs

Hey, so I know participating in summer programs can be good for college apps. But which summer programs for high school students are the most prestigious and respected during college admissions? Any pointers would be awesome. Thanks!

When it comes to prestigious summer programs for high school students, admissions officers tend to look at the selectivity, depth of study, and potential for growth in those programs. It's not so much about the 'prestige' as it is about what you, as a student, can learn and take away from the experience.

Some well-regarded programs include:

1. Research Science Institute (RSI): Held at MIT, this program is extremely selective and fully funded. Here, students conduct individual projects in fields ranging from mathematics to biology.

2. Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP): A six-week, highly selective humanities-focused program that is also fully funded.

3. Summer Science Program (SSP): A 5.5-week residential program where students engage in astronomy or biochemistry research. It’s run in various locations including New Mexico Tech and University of Colorado Boulder.

4. Boys/Girls State and Boys/Girls Nation: These programs focus on government, leadership, and community service.

5. Programs offered by top universities: Many top institutions, such as Stanford, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins, offer summer programs where students can take college-level courses. While it often looks good to attend an academic program at a prestigious university, remember that these programs are generally not very selective - they accept anyone who can afford the (often high) cost of tuition, so admissions officers won't be as impressed by them as they would be by a highly selective program.

Finally, it's important to note that you don't have to attend a 'prestigious' program to make a big impression. Creating your summer program - like starting a local community service project, conducting independent research, or launching a business - can be just as (if not more) impressive. The key is to spend your summer doing something that you're passionate about and that lets you develop and demonstrate your interests and abilities.
