HBCU Psy.D. Programs

Hey guys, does anyone here have any insights on Psy.D. programs at HBCUs? How competitive are they? Also, what's the support like for students pursuing a career in psychology at an HBCU? Just trying to gather some information as I consider my grad school options!

Hi there! I'm glad to see you're exploring your options for graduate studies in psychology. HBCUs have a rich history of providing supportive and empowering educational environments. While I can't speak for every individual program, generally, Psy.D. programs at HBCUs can be quite competitive, much like those at other institutions. Admissions committees often look for a combination of a strong academic record, relevant experience, personal statements, and letters of recommendation.

Regarding support, HBCUs are known for their tight-knit communities and emphasis on student success. Many HBCUs have initiatives and resources specifically dedicated to students in the field of psychology, providing mentorship, research opportunities, and networking that can help you as you navigate your career. As you consider HBCUs, I would encourage you to reach out to the admissions offices of the HBCUs you're interested in, and, if possible, connect with current Psy.D. students or alumni to get a personal perspective on the support available. Additionally, attending open houses or virtual information sessions can give you a better sense of what the program has to offer. Best of luck in your journey to grad school!
