Strong Performing College Basketball Conferences

First of all, there are definitely multiple factors that contribute to the success of a college basketball conference. Just as you've noted, the number of national championships won by the teams in the conference can be an important metric, but it certainly doesn't tell the whole story.

The strength and reputation of the basketball programs within the conference play a major role in its overall success. For example, a conference that houses teams with historic successes like Duke and UNC would naturally have a higher stature. These teams continually attract top basketball talents, thanks to their strong history, coaching, training facilities, etc.

One must also consider the number of times teams from the conference make it to the Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4 etc. These performances, although not resulting in championship titles, do display the competitive level of the conference.

Then there's also non-conference win ratio to look at. Dominance in the regular season, outside of the conference games, can be a good indicator of how strong the conference itself is, from top to bottom.

Lastly, let's not forget about recruiting success. A conference that consistently draws top-rated high school players is often doing many things right: it can indicate good coaching, well-funded programs, and a high level of overall competitiveness. This, in turn, helps to keep the conference strong and successful for years to come.
