Which colleges in the US are located in the most rural areas?

Hey all, I've been thinking about my application list. I've grown up in a city all my life, and I was looking to experience a change of pace for my college years. Does anyone here have any recommendations for colleges that are in more rural areas? I'm keen on forestry and outdoor activities, so I'd love to have those opportunities nearby. Thanks in advance!

There are several colleges nestled in rural areas that offer majestic scenery and an abundance of outdoor activities. Here are a few of them.

1. Dartmouth College: Located in New Hampshire, Dartmouth offers a unique blend of rural and college-town elements. Hanover is a charming small town, while the nearby White Mountains and Connecticut River provide numerous opportunities for outdoor pursuits such as hiking, skiing, and kayaking.

2. Middlebury College: In Vermont, Middlebury offers beautiful vistas of the Green Mountains and Adirondacks. It also boasts its own ski area and extensive trail system, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.

3. Colgate University: Situated in the rustic beauty of upstate New York, Colgate's campus is surrounded by a mix of farmland, forests, and rolling hills. The university has a strong focus on sustainability, and the local area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities.

4. Sewanee: The University of the South: Located in Tennessee, this college is famously situated on a 13,000-acre campus on the Cumberland Plateau. Known as the "Domain," Sewanee's campus offers miles of trails for hiking, running, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

5. Reed College: While not in a strictly rural area, Reed College in Portland, Oregon, offers access to incredible natural beauty, including forests, rivers, and nearby Mt. Hood for winter sports.

While these are just a few examples of colleges located in more rural areas, there are many others across the nation. Wherever you end up, make sure to consider the academic fit and college culture, in addition to the location. Good luck with your search!
