Do most people at state colleges come from within that state?

I'm planning on applying to some state schools, but I'm just wondering if most of their students are in-state or out-of-state. Is it common for state schools to have a large population from within the state?

Indeed, most state colleges tend to have a considerable portion of their student body from within the state. This is due to several reasons, such as lower tuition fees for in-state students, familiarity with the school's reputation, proximity to home, and the comfort of being closer to family and familiar surroundings.

However, the proportions can vary between schools. In general, flagship state universities often attract a mix of both in-state and out-of-state students due to their robust academic programs and reputations. However, the majority of the student body usually does come from within the state. That said, these colleges are always seeking to diversify and enrich their campus communities, so they positively welcome out-of-state students too.

Remember to research each school individually to get a better understanding of their student demographics.
