Yo everybody, so I'm a junior and I identify as part of the LGBT+ community. I'm planning to start college in the fall of 2024, and I'm digging up info on colleges that have really pro-LGBT+ environments. Can anyone drop any suggestions? Thanks a ton!
That's a super important criteria for a lot of students, and many universities indeed are becoming more inclusive and aware of the needs and experiences of LGBT+ students.
The University of Maryland, College Park has a well-regarded LGBT Equity Center, which provides a range of resources and programming for LGBT+ students. It's definitely a good example of a school committed to ensuring diversity and inclusivity on all levels.
The University of California, Berkeley also stands out due to its history of being at the forefront of LGBT+ rights since the '60s. It offers various LGBT+ resources including the Gender Equity Resource Center.
Tufts University is known to be super supportive of its LGBT+ students. The University has its Center for the Study of Race and Democracy (CSRD) that specifically deals with issues pertaining to diversity and equality.
Lastly, consider Rutgers University. It has established various "Safe Spaces," or locations where staff members have received training on transgender, bisexual, gay, and lesbian inclusive strategies and are knowledgeable on-campus resources.
These are just a few examples. I'd also recommend checking out the Campus Pride Index, which ranks schools based on how LGBT+-friendly they are. Try to also reach out to current students at the colleges you're interested in to get a more personal perspective.
