Which foreign languages are popular among college students?

Hey all, as I'm pondering my future studies, I'd like to explore a new language and all the cultural context that comes with it. Any idea what the most popular foreign languages studied in college currently are? And why do students tend to choose these?

College students often gravitate towards foreign languages that will be most beneficial to their career and personal interests. Heading the list, Spanish is an extremely popular language due to its high utility in the United States and abroad. It's spoken by millions of people worldwide and knowing it will definitely be an asset regardless of your career or personal goals.

Next on the list, French and German usually follow Spanish in popularity. French is spoken in many parts of the world, is an official language of the UN, and a lot of the social sciences material is published in French. German is critical in fields like philosophy, physics, and music, many of the best philosophers, scientists, and composers of Western Canon were German-speaking people.

Italian and Portuguese are also popular among students who are interested in art history, music, architecture, and those who wish to work in countries where these languages are spoken.

For those looking for languages relevant to political studies, career growth, or with an interest in Eastern cultures, Mandarin and Arabic could be chosen. Mandarin Chinese, in particular, is seen as a strategic language due to China's rising global influence and vast population.

Japanese and Korean are popular among students interested in technology and pop culture due to Japan and South Korea's influence in these areas. Lastly, American Sign Language (ASL) has become more popular not only for its utility but also for raising awareness of and integrating with Deaf culture.

Remember, students often choose languages that align with their interests, career paths, or that offer a rich cultural understanding for travel or personal purposes. It is worthwhile considering all these factors before deciding on one.
