How rigorous is Franklin and Marshall?

I'm currently a junior considering applying to Franklin and Marshall. I've heard that the academics there are quite challenging. Can anyone offer any insight into this? Do students generally struggle with balancing classes, or does the workload seem manageable?

Franklin and Marshall is indeed known for its rigorous academic environment. The courses can be quite challenging, and students often report spending a good amount of time outside of class studying, writing papers, and preparing for exams.

The college aims at achieving a balance between imparting knowledge and developing skills, so even though the workload may be heavy at times, it is designed to be manageable. Also, keep in mind that academic rigor will often vary depending on what you choose to major in and the particular course selection.

However, that said, one key aspect of Franklin and Marshall is their emphasis on small, discussion-based classes. This allows students to ask questions, clarify concepts, and interact closely with both professors and fellow students, which can help in managing the workload.

Moreover, Franklin and Marshall offers a significant range of resources to help students with their academic load. For example, there's the Quantitative & Science Center (Q&SC) which provides assistance in math and sciences, and the Writing Center that supports students in improving writing skills.

Also, time management plays a crucial role in maintaining a balance. It can certainly be overwhelming at first, especially if you're also trying to juggle extracurricular activities and social commitments. But, with time, most students do find ways to efficiently manage their time and handle the workload.

So, while the academic life at Franklin and Marshall might be challenging, it’s not insurmountable. Additionally, overcoming these challenges goes a long way in preparing students for success beyond college.
