What's the deal with highly stressful college courses?

Hey guys and gals! I’ve been hearing about how some courses are ridiculously stressful in college. Is this true? If so, how do you cope with these extremely demanding college courses and what can be done to lessen that stress?

Responding from the perspective of a college admissions counselor:

I can understand why stressing about college courses might be a concern for you. It's true that college courses can be more rigorous and demanding than many high school courses. This increased rigor is often due to more complex and in-depth subject matter, higher expectations for independent learning, and sometimes larger workloads.

Here are a few strategies to manage stress and succeed in tough courses:

1. Time Management: Start with careful planning of your schedule. Be sure to allow plenty of time for studying, completing assignments, and preparing for exams. Use tools like planners, calendars, or apps to help you stay organized.

2. Ask for Help: Don't hesitate to ask for help when you're stuck. This could mean going to office hours, joining a study group, or using your university's tutoring or academic success centers.

3. Take Breaks: Even though managing your workload is important, remember to take breaks for self-care. Going for a walk, spending time with friends, or practice mindfulness techniques– these can help to reduce stress and improve your focus when you return back to studying.

4. Stay Active: Regular physical exercise can not only keep you healthy but also increase your energy levels and enhance your mood, which can better equip you to handle academic stress.

5. Sleep Well: Make sure to get enough sleep. Studies have shown that lack of sleep can affect academic performance.

How you pick your courses can also make a difference. Look for a mix of courses each semester - some that you feel confident about and others that may challenge you. Balance is key.

Remember, college is a learning experience, and facing challenges is part of that journey. And hey, once you've conquered a challenging course, you'll likely feel more confident to take on the next one! Keep in mind that everyone’s experience with a given course can vary so don’t stress yourself out too much over hearsay. You’ll do great!
