Newest HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges)

Hey all, I'm doing some research and I can't seem to find much on this. But, does anyone know which are some of the most recent HBCUs that have been established?

Hello,

Sure, I can help with that! Though it is important to note that new HBCUs are not founded frequently due to the historical context surrounding their creation. HBCUs were typically founded in the aftermath of the Civil War when higher education for black people was largely inaccessible.

However, among the newest HBCUs, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science founded in 1966 in Los Angeles, California, stands out. This university is specifically aimed at training medical personnel to serve underserved areas.

R. Nathaniel Dett School of Music at Niagara University, founded in 2021 and located in Niagara Falls, New York, is an interesting case, as it's an HBCU program within a predominantly white institution (PWI). It's one of the first such programs of its kind.

So, while it's not common for new HBCUs to be founded given the historical nature of these institutions, there are still developments within the landscape, such as new programs or specializations that are being established.
