How is Oberlin for transgender students?

Hola folks! I identify as transgender and I'm researching colleges that are inclusive and supportive. I've heard that Oberlin College can be trans-friendly. Can anyone, especially those who've actually been there, confirm this and share their experiences? Thank you!

Absolutely, Oberlin College is generally known for its welcoming environment for transgender students, and has several measures in place to support them. This reputation comes from its inclusive policies and resources. For instance, Oberlin has a non-discrimination policy that specifically includes gender identity and expression.

Oberlin also offers a free name change service for students who wish to be recognized by a different name than on their legal ID. This change is reflected on class rosters, diplomas, and email addresses. And yes, this includes preferred pronouns too, which faculty are encouraged to use.

As for housing, the school offers a variety of housing types, including a Gender Inclusive housing option. This means that students can elect to live in dorms, co-ops, or theme-based housing without regard to their gender.

The school also has trans-inclusive healthcare. Oberlin’s Student Health Services is quite comprehensive, and it includes access to counseling, hormone therapy, and general health services.

In terms of community, the college places great emphasis on creating a supportive and respectful environment on campus. They offer various support groups and clubs, such as the Queers & Allies of Faith, where students can have open and safe discussions regarding their experiences.

Finally, Oberlin also has a gender, sexuality, and feminist studies department, which means they elicit academic conversation around these topics, further creating an open and inclusive environment.

Nobody's experience is universal, of course, so different students might have different experiences. There are likely challenges as well, as in any college, but overall it seems like Oberlin College could be a good fit for you.
