Necessities for College

I'm a high school junior and I'm trying to get ahead of the curve a bit. I've been thinking a lot about what stuff's actually useful and necessary to bring to college? You know, beyond the obvious things like clothes and bedding. Can you guys suggest some non-obvious items you found really useful? Also, are there things that you brought and never used? Thanks.

Hello! Your forward-planning is really a smart move, as it can save a lot of trouble later. Here are some non-obvious items that may come handy in college:

1. A good-quality, high-speed portable charger: College life can get very busy and you may not always have time to sit next to an outlet while your phone or tablet charges.

2. Water filter pitcher: It’s important to stay hydrated and, in some places, tap water might not be of the best quality or taste. Having your own water filter can save you some money and is also a more eco-friendly option.

3. Mini fridge & Microwave: If you're lucky, these will be provided in your dorm room, but if not, they're great to have for storing and heating up leftover food or snacks.

4. First Aid Kit: It's a good idea to keep a basic first aid kit for minor injuries. You never know when you might need a Band-Aid or some medicine for a headache.

5. Shower Shoes and Caddy: If you're going to be sharing bathroom facilities, these will come in handy to protect your feet from germs and to carry your bathroom essentials.

6. Noise canceling headphones: Perfect for when you need to focus on studying in a noisy dorm or coffee shop.

As for the items that students often bring and don't use, a printer tops the list. Almost everything is digital these days and many campuses have printing facilities. So, this might take up unnecessary space in your limited luggage. Idem for a television, as most students watch shows and movies on their laptops or tablets.

Also, avoid bringing excess clothes or decorations. Dorm rooms are usually compact, and these can clutter up your space.

Everyone is different, so what's useful or unnecessary can change from person to person. But hopefully, these suggestions can give you a head start!
