Underused college scholarships: where to look?

Just like everyone else, I'm trying to find ways to cut down on the costs of college. I know there's a lot of underused scholarships out there, so where would you guys suggest looking? Any specific ones that don't get enough attention?

Finding underused or overlooked scholarships can indeed lessen the burden of college costs. There are a couple of strategies you could employ:

1. Local Scholarships: This is one category often ignored by students. Check out scholarships offered by your local businesses, community organizations, and non-profit foundations. They may not have as much competition because they're limited to your local area.

2. Employer Scholarships: If you or your parents work for a company that offers scholarships to employees or their children, this is an excellent avenue to explore. Some larger corporations offer these scholarships.

3. Special Interest Scholarships: These are scholarships provided to students with specific interests, hobbies, or career aspirations. For example, there are scholarships for aspiring journalists, for students interested in beekeeping, for those passionate about sustainable agriculture, the list goes on.

4. Scholarships for Minority and First-Gen Students: If you belong to an underrepresented group or are the first in your family to attend college, there might be scholarships specifically geared towards you.

5. Non-traditional Scholarships: These are scholarships that cater to unique life circumstances–if you're a single parent, if you've taken a substantial break between high school and college, if you're planning on studying online, etc.

6. Your Intended College: Don't forget to look at what your potential college offers. Often they have scholarships that go unused simply because students don't apply for them.

Check out helpful online databases as well, as long as they're not charging you for the service. Be patient and persistent; finding scholarships is a process that requires effort and thorough investigation. Remember, even smaller scholarships add up! For some scholarships that may fly under the radar, think outside the box—do you have a unique talent or skill, like yo-yoing or duck calling? There may be a scholarship for it.
