What defines a 'Traditional' College?

Hiya! I keep coming across the phrase 'most traditional colleges', and I'm a bit unsure about what it means. Could someone elaborate on what a 'traditional' college experience entails? Any input would be great.

Hello! Great question. The term 'traditional college' is generally used to describe universities that are residential, operate on a semester system, provide a broad selection of educational programs, and have a very diverse mix of students, including those coming straight from high school, as well as adults returning to education.

Firstly, in a traditional college, students typically move into dormitories on campus or nearby housing. This college housing arrangement often becomes a significant part of social life, and provides an immersive experience. It's also common for students to participate in extracurricular activities such as clubs, fraternities or sororities, and sports teams.

Second, most traditional colleges operate on a semester system (Fall and Spring), with some offering summer courses as well. During each semester, students usually take multiple classes across a variety of subjects. Those full-time students generally take 12-18 credits (or about 4-5 courses) each semester.

Thirdly, traditional colleges usually offer a wide variety of academic disciplines for undergraduate studies, from arts and humanities to sciences and engineering. In addition to foundational courses, traditional colleges generally offer vast elective choices, allowing students to explore different areas of interest or focus in-depth on their major.

Finally, traditional colleges generally have a student body diverse in age and experience. The typical entering freshman is generally 18 years old and has just completed high school, but these colleges also have transfer students, returning adults, and international students.

In contrast, 'non-traditional' colleges or educational programs may offer accelerated course options, night or weekend classes, online study, or part-time study to cater to people who may be balancing jobs, family, and other responsibilities alongside their education.

I hope this clears things up!
