What are some notable HBCUs near New Jersey for a prospective student interested in a close-knit community?

Hey everyone, I'm a high school junior from NJ and considering the cultural and academic vibes at HBCUs. Could someone recommend HBCUs that are within a reasonable distance from New Jersey where I could still feel a strong sense of community and support? Also, bonus points if you know of their special programs or what they're particularly known for!

Hello! It's wonderful to hear about your interest in HBCUs and their vibrant communities. From New Jersey, you have a few options that might pique your interest. Just south in Maryland, there's Bowie State University and Morgan State University. Both are known for fostering a strong sense of community and belonging among their students.

Bowie State is particularly noted for its STEM programs, including computer science and cybersecurity. Morgan State, on the other hand, is well-regarded for its business, architecture, and engineering programs.

Further down, in Washington, D.C., Howard University is one of the most prominent HBCUs in the country, with a diverse range of programs and a rich history of African American culture. A bit more of a stretch, but still in the realm of what I'd consider reasonable travel from New Jersey, is Hampton University in Virginia, known for its strong science and business education.

When considering HBCUs, remember that while they're all known for having vibrant, interconnected communities that celebrate Black cultural heritage, each one has its own unique atmosphere and specialties. I encourage you to visit campuses, if possible, and connect with current students to really feel out the sense of community.

Finally, admissions offices love to help potential students like yourself, so reach out to them for specific program details—that's what they're there for!
