Do most students typically take 5 years to graduate college?

I'm trying to plan my college years and I noticed some students take a 'victory lap' and graduate in 5 years instead of 4. Is this the norm? What factors lead students to extend their undergraduate studies?

While some students do indeed take more than the traditional four years to complete their undergraduate degree, it's not necessarily the norm. According to data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, about 59% of students who began seeking a bachelor's degree at a four-year institution in fall 2012 completed that degree at the same institution within six years. This would leave a substantial proportion of students who take more than four years, but it's important to note that this encompasses those who take anywhere between 4 and 6 years, not just those who take 5.

There are several factors that can lead to an extended undergraduate experience. Some students may choose (or be required) to participate in a co-op program or internship that extends their program duration. Students pursuing double majors or minors may need extra time to fulfil all their requirements.

Others may face personal circumstances such as health issues or family commitments that necessitate a reduced course load and thus a longer timeline. Some students may also choose to lighten their course load to accommodate extracurricular activities, job commitments, or simply to lessen the academic pressure.

Similarly, changing majors - especially late in the academic journey - can often extend the timeline as well, since the student will need to complete the requirements of the new major which might not overlap much with their previous course of study.

Regardless of the timeline it takes for a student to graduate, it’s most important that students are comfortable with their pacing and that they are meeting their individual academic and personal goals.
