How are the 'Most Diverse Colleges' Ranked on US News and World Report?

Hey folks, I've been trying to understand some of the college rankings that get thrown around online. Specifically, on US News and World Report, how do they determine their 'most diverse' colleges ranking? What factors do they consider? How much weight does diversity carry overall in their evaluation?

The 'Most Diverse' colleges ranking on the US News and World Report is based on the diversity index. This technique measures diversity based on the total proportion of minority students (excluding international students), and the overall mixture of racial and ethnic groups. Ethnic categories used in the diversity calculations include African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Caucasian, and multiracial (two or more races). If a student doesn't enroll as anything, they are not counted in the calculation.

For each university, a diversity index is calculated. An institution that has the same number of students from each racial or ethnic group would create a diversity index of 1.0, which is considered the highest score. Less diverse universities would have a diversity index closer to 0.

It's important to note that this indicator represents only a small portion of a school's overall ranking and is focused solely on ethnic diversity. It does not encompass other elements of diversity some may consider crucial, such as diversity of thought, socioeconomic diversity, or geographic diversity.

The ratio of the diversity index to the overall ranking score will vary across categories. While diversity is certainly an important factor for many students, it's one of many variables that the US News and World Report utilizes in their holistic ranking process, which also includes factors like academic quality, graduation rates, faculty resources, and more.
