What are the common requirements for college applications?

Okay, so I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row. What are the typical requirements most colleges have for a successful application? Any help would be appreciated.

While the precise college application requirements can vary by specific institution, here are some of the common elements you'll find in pretty much all college applications:

1. Application: The Common Application and Coalition Application are popular platforms that many colleges use. Some universities, like those in the University of California or Texas system, have their own application platforms.

2. High School Transcript: Your transcript with your grades from 9th grade up until at least the end of your junior year is crucial. You’ll send a final high school transcript after graduation, too.

3. Standardized Test Scores: Some colleges may require the SAT or ACT test scores as part of the application process. However, many colleges have gone test-optional. For instance, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Purdue University, Brown University, Yale University, The University of Texas at Austin, and California Institute of Technology have reinstated their testing requirements as of the 2024-2025 application cycle, while others remain test-optional like University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Michigan, University of Southern California, University of Wisconsin, Madison, University of Washington, and Drexel University.

4. College Essays: Most colleges require at least one essay, usually in the form of a personal statement. You may have to write additional supplemental essays, depending on the school. These essays help colleges understand your personality, values, and motivations better. Be sure to avoid cliché topics and make your essays personal and unique.

5. Letters of Recommendation: Usually, you’ll need one or two from teachers in core subject areas, plus a counselor recommendation. Make sure these people know you well and can speak to your accomplishments and potential.

6. Extracurricular Activities: You’ll list your extracurricular activities, like clubs, sports, work experience, volunteering, etc. Quality often matters more than quantity. Highlight activities that show depth, commitment, and leadership.

7. Interview: Some colleges offer optional or by-invitation-only interviews. They’re usually not a significant part of the decision process, except at a few schools.

8. Application Fee: Most colleges charge an application fee, but fee waivers are available for students who need them.

Deadlines range from early (in November) for Early Action/Decision to regular (in January or February). Each college will specify their required materials and due dates on their admissions website.

Remember, each college may have different requirements or supplements, so the key is to stay organized and keep track of requirements for each school to which you're applying.
