What are some underrated colleges in general?

Hey guys, I'm doing some college research and I've been noticing that there are likely a bunch of great schools I'm overlooking because they're not typically considered 'top-tier'. Do you have any recommendations for underrated colleges that might not be on most people's radar?

Sure thing, here are a few colleges across various locations and disciplines that are often overlooked but have fantastic programs and community culture:

1. Oberlin College: Often overshadowed by larger research schools in Ohio, Oberlin offers one of the strongest liberal arts educations in the Midwest and is known for its vibrant arts scene and commitment to social justice.

2. University of Rochester: This private university in New York is renowned for its research opportunities and flexible curriculum. Students can design their own majors which encourages independent and creative thinking.

3. Reed College: Located in Portland, Oregon, Reed offers rigorous academics and is known for its high proportion of students who go on to earn PhDs, especially in sciences.

4. Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI): A engineering-focused institution in Massachusetts that emphasizes project-based learning. Deserves more recognition for its hands-on approach and solid STEM programs.

5. Lewis & Clark College: This Portland-based college offers strong programs in international relations and environmental law. Its beautiful campus and commitment to overseas programmes make it a standout.

6. University of Miami: Known as a party school, UM also has very strong programs in marine biology, music, and sports management.

The key to finding these underrated gems is to define what you want from your college experience and then look for schools that excel in those areas rather than focusing only on traditional rankings. So, don't just focus on 'top-tier' societies, find what fits for you and apply there. Your college experience is what you make it, so focus on what will allow you to make the most of it.
