How tough are the so-called 'most difficult' college degrees?

I'm seriously thinking about majoring in a STEM field like Engineering or Computer Science, and heard they are among the 'most difficult' degrees. Can anyone shed some light on why they're considered so tough? And any tips to succeed in them?
