Public Colleges: Which state offers the most options?

I am seriously considering public colleges for their affordability and extensive resources. But, I'd like to have a lot of options. So, can you tell me which state has the most public colleges?

California has the highest number of public colleges in the United States. The state offers a mix of options, including both two-year and four-year colleges.

California's university system is split between the University of California system, which includes 9 campuses such as UCLA and UC Berkeley, and the California State University system, which comprises of 23 campuses, including schools like San Diego State University and Cal State Long Beach.

Beyond these, the state also offers 115 public community colleges under the California Community Colleges system. These community colleges offer the opportunity to earn associate degrees and prepare for a transfer to a four-year university if desired.

So, if variety is what you're after, California indeed offers an extensive choice of public colleges, each with its distinct strengths and specializations.
