Popular College Productions: Which Play Takes the Cake?

Just outta curiosity, does anyone know 'the most produced play in college'? Theater's a big part of my high school career & I'm interested to know what colleges typically lean towards production-wise, any thoughts?

While there isn't a definitive answer in terms of "the most produced play in college," certain works do tend to be popular in different higher education settings, often due to their timeless themes, scope for creative interpretation, or their exploration of relevant societal issues.

Shakespeare's works, for example, are frequently performed in colleges due to their universal themes and the vast range of interpretations possible. Plays like "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Much Ado About Nothing", and "Hamlet" offer opportunities for directors and actors to explore and present their unique takes on these classics.

Modern classics are also a common choice. Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," for instance, is a play that continues to be frequently performed due to its exploration of mass hysteria and morality. Tennessee Williams's "The Glass Menagerie" and "A Streetcar Named Desire" are also often produced, providing an examination of complex human emotions and relationships.

However, it's important to note that college theater is not just about performing established plays. Many universities, especially those with strong theater programs, encourage the production of new and original work. This provides students with the opportunity to engage in the entire creative process, from writing to directing, designing, and performing.

Ultimately, the selection of plays greatly depends on the particular college's theater department and their vision for the academic year. Some might focus on classics, while others might prefer contemporary plays or even musical theatre. As an aspiring theater enthusiast, it’s good to research the colleges you are interested in and check out the productions they have put up in the past to get an idea of their preferences.
