Looking for Green: Which are the Most Sustainable Colleges in the USA?

I have a pretty serious interest in climate change and sustainability, and I plan on pursuing it in college as well. Can anyone help me understand which colleges in the USA have the best sustainability practices in place? I'm hoping this could include initiatives like renewable energy use, waste reduction, and offering majors in environmental studies.

First of all, kudos to you for consciously seeking opportunities that align with your interests and values!

There are several colleges in the USA known for their sustainability efforts. To start with, Middlebury College in Vermont is a pioneer in this regard. The school committed to carbon neutrality by 2016 and reached that goal. They now have a focus on renewable energy and other areas of sustainability that are integrated into their curriculum.

Similarly, University of California, Berkeley is also noted for its robust sustainability initiatives. Its campus boasts a number of LEED-certified buildings and it offers an extensive range of courses dedicated to sustainability. In fact, UC Berkeley has a dedicated Office of Sustainability, which spearheads various green initiatives.

Colby College in Maine achieved carbon neutrality in 2013 and has its own biomass plant, geothermal energy projects, and a commitment to sourcing food locally for its dining services.

The College of the Atlantic in Maine completely focuses on human ecology, offering a single degree. Much of the curriculum is steeped in sustainability, and the college has been carbon neutral since 2007.

Stanford University in California has a long-term plan for sustainability, including having a revolutionary energy system, reducing potable water footprint and encouraging alternative transportation.

Finally, Colorado State University is a pioneer in sustainability research and operations. The school has implemented widespread recycling programs, promotes alternative transportation, and utilizes solar energy.

Don't forget to verify this information with the schools themselves, as they often have more detailed and updated information on their specific sustainability policies.

I hope this information helps guide you in your college search! Good luck!
