What majors shine at HBCUs?

Hi guys! I'm in the process of listing out colleges and obviously HBCUs are on my list. I've heard that some majors are really strong at HBCUs compared to other schools. Can anyone shed some light on what majors are typically standouts at HBCUs, and what makes them so great? Any personal experience or knowledge would be super helpful as I try to figure out if my intended major aligns well with the strengths of HBCUs.

Hello there! It's exciting to hear that you're considering HBCUs in your college search. HBCUs have a history of excellence in several fields.

Particularly, they are well known for their programs in STEM, Business, Political Science, and Education. One reason for their strength in these areas is their supportive learning environment that fosters success among students, which can be beneficial for disciplines that minorities are traditionally underrepresented in.

For example, Howard University and Spelman College have outstanding reputation in producing graduates who excel in STEM fields. Additionally, many HBCUs have strong connections with influential African American leaders and professionals, which can lead to excellent mentorship and networking opportunities, particularly in Political Science and Business.

If you're looking into a major within these disciplines, an HBCU could be a great fit. Also keep in mind that, while these are some of the fields that are strong across most HBCUs, each school is also different, and will have its own areas of particular strength, so make sure you're paying attention to the reputation of the particular programs you're interested in at the schools on your list.

Best of luck with your college search!
