Which degree is most common among politicians?

I've been contemplating a future career in politics and I have a question. What college degree is most common among politicians? Is there a certain path of study most of them gravitate toward?

Many politicians often have a background in law, hence a significant number of them hold a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. This is largely because the skill set and knowledge base that a law degree provides can be incredibly useful in the field of politics. Studying law cultivates a strong understanding of the legislative process and the constitution, which are foundational elements to a political career.

However, remember that there are many paths into politics and this field values a diverse range of experiences and academic backgrounds. For instance, some politicians study government, political science, economics, history, sociology, business, or international relations during their undergraduate years.

Others may not have a degree related to politics or law at all. For example, several politicians have degrees in education, psychology, or even the sciences. It's the transferrable skills and experiences you gain – such as public speaking, leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, and understanding various perspectives – that are most important, not necessarily the subject of your degree.

To summarize, while a law degree is common, the varied backgrounds of politicians demonstrate that there is no single 'right' degree to pursue a career in politics. Studying what interests you the most, gaining relevant work experience, and honing important skills are critical steps instead.
