Marine Biology at HBCUs

I'm a junior looking into marine biology programs and I'd love to attend an HBCU! Does anyone know of HBCUs that offer reputable marine biology programs? I'm super interested in marine conservation and would prefer a program with hands-on research opportunities.

Hello there! Unfortunately, finding programs specifically for marine biology at HBCUs might be tricky, as this is a somewhat niche field at the undergraduate level, and so most colleges, not just HBCUs, don't have a dedicated department for it. That being said, on the bright side there are definitely some HBCUs that offer robust courses in environmental science or related fields that could allow you to delve into marine conservation.

One such school is Savannah State University in Georgia, which has a Marine Science program and provides opportunities for research and field work due to its proximity to the coast. Furthermore, Howard University in Washington, D.C. offers environmental studies programs that might include aspects of marine science.

I'd also recommend reaching out to the biology departments of HBCUs you're interested in to inquire about opportunities for specialization in marine conservation. Faculty members can often provide insight into the types of research conducted at the institution and may be aware of interdisciplinary paths that could suit your interests. Make sure to also ask about partnerships or internships with research institutes and organizations located near water bodies, as these can be pivotal for hands-on experience in the field of marine biology.

Best of luck in finding a program that aligns with your passions!
