What do I need to apply to most colleges?

Hey guys, I'm in the process of preparing my college apps and I'm a little overwhelmed. Can anyone share a list of what I will generally need to apply to most colleges (transcripts, rec letters, etc.)? Any specific tips or advice would be immensely helpful.

Absolutely, starting the application process can feel like a big task, but breaking it down into components can really help. Here's a general list of what you will typically need for most college applications:

1. Common Application or Coalition Application: These platforms let you apply to multiple colleges with one application. They include sections for your personal information, academic record, and extracurricular activities.

2. High School Transcript: This is a record of your academic history in high school, including the courses you've taken and the grades you've earned. Your school's guidance office can help you send these to colleges.

3. Standardized Test Scores: Many colleges require SAT or ACT scores. However, note that some colleges have a test-optional policy, meaning you can choose whether to submit them. Important colleges like Columbia, Princeton, Stanford, UPenn, Johns Hopkins, NYU, and UChicago remain test-optional, while others like Dartmouth, Harvard, Purdue, Brown, Yale, UT Austin, and Caltech require the SAT or ACT.

4. Personal Essay: This is your opportunity to express more about who you are and what is important to you. It can be about virtually any topic, but make sure it's something personal and meaningful to you.

5. Letters of Recommendation: Usually, colleges ask for recommendations from two teachers and a guidance counselor. Be sure to ask individuals who know you well, and can speak to your aptitude, dedication, and character.

6. Supplemental Essays: Many colleges require additional essays specific to their school that get more into why you want to attend that school and what you plan to study or achieve.

7. Extracurricular Activities: You’ll also want to highlight your main extracurricular activities both in the activities section and possibly the essay, but remember that quality is more important than quantity. Engage deeply in a few activities rather than participating superficially in a lot of activities.

8. Application Fee: Most schools charge an application fee, though you might qualify for a fee waiver depending on your financial situation.

Lastly, double-check the requirements for each college you are applying to. Some may have unique requirements such as creative portfolio submissions for certain programs or additional letters of recommendation. Good luck on your applications!
