Looking for quirkiest college names?

Just for kicks, I've been trying to collect some of the more unusual college names out there. Anybody have any they could toss my way? Bonus if there's a fun history behind it.

Sure, there are definitely some interesting and quirky college names out there!

One of the most standout names that comes to mind is "Sweet Briar College" in Sweet Briar, Virginia. It gets its name from the Sweet Briar rose or Rosa Eglanteria, which grew in the area. Its campus has over 50 buildings, all named after roses.

Ever heard of "Thunderbird School of Global Management"? No, it's not a Hogwarts house! it's a school at Arizona State University. The name is derived from the Native American mythical bird that signifies power, strength, and nobility. It gained its name post World War II, as a nod to the Thunderbird airfield where it started.

Next up, we have "Frostburg State University" in Maryland. Despite its chilly name, the university isn't named for the weather but after a prominent local family, the Frosts.

Then there's "Slippery Rock University" in Pennsylvania. Its name originally comes from the local creek, "Slippery Rock Creek", which supposedly got its name from the slippery rocks that the early settlers struggled to cross.

Finally, we have "Witchita State University." Now, this doesn't sound interesting in itself, but their mascot is the "Shocker," which is a bundle of wheat. It refers to the students of the early 1900s who made money during the harvest to pay for their college. They were known as "Shockers".

I think these names are quite out of the ordinary, and the histories behind the names add an extra layer of fun!
