Is Tufts one of the most expensive colleges?

I've been trying to figure out the cost situation for all the colleges I'm interested in, and Tufts University came up on my list. I heard it's pretty pricey... is it one of the most expensive colleges in the country? How do students handle this?

In terms of total sticker price, which includes tuition, fees, room, and board, Tufts University does indeed have a high cost of attendance, which can reach up to $84,000 per academic year for the 2024-2025 cycle. So, it's accurate to say that Tufts is among the more expensive private universities in the U.S.

However, the sticker price isn't the whole story. Like many other universities with high costs of attendance, Tufts provides significant financial aid to students who need it. Over 40% of Tufts undergraduates receive need-based grants from the university, effectively lowering their out-of-pocket costs. Keep in mind that these institutions calculate aid based on a variety of factors including your family's income, assets, number of siblings in college, among others.

Additionally, remember that the net price (what you actually pay after financial aid is factored in) tends to vary quite a bit from the sticker price. You can use Tufts' net price calculator to get an estimate of what you and your family might expect to pay.

Work-study, external scholarships, and yes, student loans, can also play a role in how students manage costs. Ultimately, the ‘price tag’ of Tufts or any other college should be seen in the broader context of your own financial situation and willingness to take on student debt.

It's crucial to apply to a range of schools, both in terms of admission competitiveness and cost so that you have options and can make the best decision for you and your family.
