Can anyone recommend HBCUs with strong outdoor programs or activities?

I'm all about the outdoor life and I'm wondering if there are HBCUs known for their outdoor clubs, recreational activities, or environmental programs. Would love to hear about any personal experiences!

Hey there! I totally get the desire for a strong outdoor program—college is hectic, and sometimes you need to just get away from it all! I've heard that North Carolina Central University has a great Environmental, Earth, and Geospatial Sciences program. They also have the Outdoor Adventure club, which could be right up your alley.

I'd also recommend checking out Howard University, where there are multiple student organizations that may pique your interest in outdoor activities, including an outing club. Howard is in the heart of Washington, D.C., however, so if you're looking for an overall outdoorsy vibe in college be aware that you probably won't find it there.

As you research, keep in mind that even if the specific HBCU you're considering doesn't have a formal program, many have student-run clubs, and you could even consider starting your own! Remember, being empowered to take take initiative and create something new is one of the best things about college.

If that feels like getting ahead of yourself, though, a quick look through each college's student activities webpage, or a call to the student affairs office, should give you plenty of information. Wishing you luck in finding the perfect match for your interests!
