Understanding SAT Requirements

Hey guys, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with the whole college admissions thing, especially when it comes to understanding SAT scores. Does anyone knows what are the general SAT requirements for most colleges? I need a ballpark figure to set as my goal. Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi there, I understand that navigating college admissions can feel a bit challenging at times, but you're on the right track seeking advice.

In general, average SAT scores for majority of colleges tend to be within the range of 1100-1300, though, there can be exceptions on either end. However, for prestigious, selective colleges, you'd often find that the average SAT score of accepted students is considerably higher. The 25th-75th percentile SAT score at top-tier institutions usually hovers in the range of 1500-1600.

It's also crucial to consider your prospective major and the specific schools you're interested in, as requirements can vary significantly. For instance, STEM-based programs might require higher Math scores.

A valuable tool is to look up the 'middle 50%' scores for schools on your list. This range indicates that 25% of admitted students scored below the lower number and 25% scored above the higher number, giving an accuracy of where your score should ideally lie.

And remember, the SAT score is just one part of your application, and you can certainly balance a lower score with strong aspects in other areas like extracurriculars, essays, and recommendation letters. Happy studying!
